Malibu Kayaks is a hot, young company spawned by young people who loved kayaking for sport uses as well as for fishing. This love shows in the quality and thoughtfulness of their products.
This sit-inside fishing kayak gives you more bang for your buck than some more expensive models. (At the end of this article, we discuss the pros and cons of a sit-inside fishing kayak.)
Product Features That Are Unique
Weigh Capacity: How do you know for sure if you are over the stated ‘weight capacity’ when you don’t put everything on a scale before you load the kayak? It’s fairly easy. The kayak will sink lower into the water than it should. So, in this case if the water is nipping at your elbows once you get inside, you’re definitely over the 325-pound weight limit!
The average weight of snacks, drinks, rods, tackle, bait bucket, extra clothes and other standard gear included in this package is approximately 65-pounds for a 4-hour excursion – so that will give you a guestimate.
Dimensions: The cockpit dimensions of the Malibu Sierra 10 Pro Series allows those who are over 6-feet tall and those a little on the chubby side to sit comfortably in the cockpit without feeling cramped.
The hard shell polyethylene body with the narrowing hull bottom allows you to skim through the water smoothly while being able to resist dents and bruises when it comes up against rocks and underbrush.
Seats: The Apex seat is made with padded foam at the seat and backrest and shaped for extra lumbar support. It sits off the floor of the cockpit, helping to prevent leg cramps and to keep your butt from sitting in water from overspray.
Fish and Dive Package that is part of this Malibu Sierra 10 Pro Series includes the front and rear bungee system to keep your storage bins from sliding out, 2 rod holders at the rear that are flush with the side of the kayak, and arm and leg rests to increase comfort while waiting for that elusive fish to grab your line.
Bungee Paddle Holder at the front deck to keep your paddles easily accessible but out of the way when fishing.
Storage Galore including internal and external storage areas. In the cockpit, there is a tank well large enough to hold bins for extra clothes, snacks, tools, and other items that you want to keep dry. At the rear, you have an extra-large storage compartment that can hold a large cooler to make sure your lunch is handy or a 5-gallon bucket for your catch.
In addition, there is a second large, internal storage area to stash your extra rods, rope, camera or two medium-sized plastic storage containers (Rubber Maid is suggested to ensure spray doesn’t seep in).

Accessories You May Want to Consider:
Since there is no paddle included, obviously (unless you happen to have several) this will be something you may want since scooping water with your hand could be time consuming. We suggest either of these:
Crack of Dawn Tsunami Kayak Paddle which is made specifically for the Malibu Fishing Kayak line.
This 2-piece paddle has an adjustable shaft and nylon blades designed to move water smoothly with little noise to disturb fish in the area.
Users say that in spite of the low price tag, you get more thrust from each stroke than you do with other more expensive paddles.
Cannon Paddles Wave Slider Adjustable Length Kayak Fishing Paddle is the second paddle we recommend. This paddle is designed for both touring and fishing.
This also has a nylon blade reinforced with fiberglass threads, is adjustable for use on boats, kayaks or canoes, according to the height of the person.
The measuring tape on the shaft prevents the “big one” stories from getting out of control and makes it easy to know when a fish is too small to keep.
For whatever reason, kayak paddles apparently have a nasty habit of springing loose and dashing off on their own on their favorite current. If there is one thing that every yakker needs it’s a paddle leash.
PROYAKER Ocean Tough Kayak Accessories Set of 2 Universal Paddle / Fishing Rod Leash By Proyaker is the best bargain on the market.
But, they also work well for fishing rods that may get yanked into the water by an aggressive fish.
The coil extends up to 6-feet without losing its spring due to the stainless steel core.
Is This Fishing Kayak for You?
Most anglers will tell you to go for the sit-on-top style but that’s not always the best choice. Sit-inside fishing kayaks are not for everyone but they do serve particular purposes.
However, if a sit-inside flips over, you may find yourself upside down for a moment or two as you swim out from under your kayak and then righting it can be tricky.
If you have a physical difficulty (like an old body that isn’t as nimble as it used to be), then a sit-inside is probably not a great option for you.
It is just as easy to fish from a sit-inside as it is from a sit-on-top style kayak. The main difference is that you won’t be standing up … ever and if you want the option of changing positions, choose the sit-on-top. On the other hand, if you plan to try surfing waves or running rapids, this is the one you want.
