Malibu Pro 2 Tandem Fish and Dive Package Kayak Review

Malibu Pro 2 Tandem Fish and Dive Package Kayak Review

Fishing Kayak Review of Malibu Kayaks Pro 2 Tandem Fish and Dive Package Sit on Top Kayak

The young team at Malibu Kayaks are at it again!  This tandem fishing kayak is designed for lakes, ponds, fast moving rivers, or sleepy streams. The hull slices through waves and weeds as you move into the hidden areas of brush to snatch the fish that got away – once.  This sit on top style is easy to get into and out of even for seniors and those with physical issues.

Made of polyethylene as a single molded form prevents any weakened seams since none exist.

Not only is this Malibu Pro 2 Tandem outfitted for fishing, it’s good for recreational paddling and for use in diving. The sides are low enough so that it is easy to get back into the yak without tipping it over.

Product Features That Are Unique

Weigh Capacity:

The approximate 13-foot length and 33” width serves to make this a stable, difficult to flip, fishing kayak.  This snappy tandem kayak supports up to 550-pounds – more than enough for two healthy adults, diving gear, fishing gear and plenty of food to pass the time.

Fabrication:

Made of hard molded polyethylene, the Malibu Kayaks Pro 2 Tandem fishing kayak weighs only 62-pounds. Two average adults can easily lift and move this yak from shore to water and back with little difficulty.  The weight suggests that a single person could move it but the length and bulkiness may make it awkward.

While the weight would not mandate a pull-behind trailer, the 13-feet length would.  Trying to pack it in the back of an SUV would still have several feet hanging out over the open road where road debris could kick up or natural road bumps could shake it enough to cause damage. At just over $1,000, it’s probably better to treat it like an investment and get a trailer.

Seats:

If you are unfamiliar with yakker terms, “dry seating” means sitting on plastic.  There are indentations representing a place to park  your body, but there are no cushions or padded backrests for the weary fisherman. Translated:  If you plan to be comfortable for a day on the lake, invest in a real seat.

There are tie down points positioned to secure seats for either a two-person configuration or in a central position (on top of the square cargo compartment) for a single paddler.  (We include 2 options at the end of this review.)

Fish and Dive Features Included:

  • 8-inch round Rear Hatch with Bucket located in front of the rear seat makes this easy to access and with the bucket included, you know it’ll be the right size.
  • 6 Flush Mounted Rod Holders are out of the way when casting but positioned to allow each angler 3 rods in the water at a time.
  • Front dive well large enough for a dive tank (or to stash a small picnic if you aren’t into diving)

Recreational Features Included:

  • 6-point rectangular center hatch for medium size container
  • 8-inch Round Front Hatch with Bucket

Standard Features Included:

  • Bungee tank cord and nylon hooks
  • Center molded foot wells to help with balancing and paddling
  • Drain Plug
  • Molded insert space for trolling motor mount

Accessories for Comfort or Fun:

Foot stops in the well in front of each seat helps give you leverage for paddling.

Beverage holders are in front of each seat and the flatter surfaces work as platforms for cutting bait, making sandwiches or use for a seat for pets or small child.

Made by Crack of Dawn, this is one of the very best seats on the market.  If you spend more time fishing with your best mate, buy this one for yourself at $120 and a less expensive one for the second person.

This complete seating option includes rear gear bag, dual built-in rod holders, tool holders on the thickest padded seat by Crack of Dawn.

For the second party in your group, this is still a good seat, rattling for only $45. Made by Ocean Kayak, it fits any sit on top kayak seat.  The side panels help to keep the passenger dry without interfering with fishing skills.

Is This Fishing Kayak for You?

If you are searching for a tandem fishing kayak in a mid-range price, this should be on the top of your list for consideration.

Granted, you will have to spend money on padded seats and paddles if you want to actually get away from the shore, but the Pro 2 Tandem has the details that will make your fishing experience enjoyable.

If you are interested in getting into other water activities – such as diving – or want a fishing kayak that can handle lakes of all sizes, ponds, fast and slow rivers and even be stable enough to take into the ocean, this is definitely one to consider seriously.
