Product Features That Are Unique

Weigh Capacity:  Of the top three sit-inside fishing kayaks in our list, this has the lowest weight capacity at 250-pounds: it is also one of the most popular for year round sportsman.  The average added weight of snacks, drinks, rods, tackle, bait bucket, extra clothes and other standard gear included in this package is approximately 50-pounds for a 4-hour excursion – for one person.

Dimensions: The cockpit dimensions with a 38” interior width of the Sun Dolphin Excursion 10 allows those who are just under  6’1” and in fit shape. This unit is a terrific answer for a solo fishing kayak.

The hard shell polyethylene body with the knife-life shape of the hull acts almost as a skeg piercing the water and cutting the waves as you move.  The overall length of the unit is 9.5’, making it ideal for tracking and turning for a single individual. It sits low in the water with the cockpit only 13” above the water.

The yak is molded in two sections and welded together at the center of  the hull which acts as a strake and reduces the chances of rolling.

Seats: The seat is an upgraded deluxe model with a the seat back placed to hit the back just beneath the shoulders.

The adjustable Foot braces add to both comfort and control of when plowing through waves and cutting across winds. However, you should be prepared to buy a foam pad or stadium seat; otherwise you will be sitting on the hard surface.

Accessories Included:

Storage is always an issue in kayak fishing and the covered hatch with bungee cords over the top serve double duty. First, the bungee keeps the hatch closed and secured even if you tip over (which according to users, is rare.)  Second, using additional bungee cords, you can attach a bait bucket, sealed containers with beverages, and other sealed containers to store your catch letting them hang off the stern as you fish or paddle forward.

The small bungeed day-well in the bow can be used for smaller items that you will want to get to quickly.

The Two Flush Mounted Rod Holders are located just behind the seat and are especially good for trolling, while the swivel rod holder is ideal for placing your rod to pick up other things – like a second rod with a fish dying to go home with  you.

Is This Fishing Kayak for You?

It is just as easy to fish from a sit-inside as it is from a sit-on-top style kayak. Fishing kayaks are not generally designed for sporting or touring and this one is no different. It is designed for lakes, rivers and ponds ONLY.

The Sun Dolphin Excursion 10 is great for fishing and hunting. The angled bow cuts through waves and weeds in areas where fish love to hide.

If you are purchasing a fishing kayak for the first time, this may suit your purposes.  It is not a high-end yak and does not come with bells and whistles. But, it is a favorite to use as an extra kayak for family fishing fun when you need one for a partner that rarely goes out.

Most anglers will tell you to go for the sit-on-top style but that’s not always the best choice.  Sit-inside fishing kayaks are not for everyone but they do serve particular purposes.

  • If you fish in colder waters, such as northern lakes or oceans, then having the protection of a sit-inside kayak is a huge benefit.
  • If you prefer a smooth, faster glide over a slower movement, then sit-inside is a good option.

If you have a physical difficulty (like an old body that isn’t as nimble as it used to be), then a sit-inside is probably not the best choice.
